When Catherine turned about 16, she went through a kind of punk phase. Over the years I had done plenty of sketches of her and she began to complain that in every one she looked like something off a Hallmark card. This is the first sketch we did with her hair down and makeup on. The tiny splash of bright pink adds to that punk edge. Oddly enough, the actual sketch was 1.5" x 1.75" and was done for a 9 image collage jewelry box for her grandmother's birthday. It is Catherine's favorite sketch.
This sketch of Catherine is more the style that we usually do. The real sketch was roughly .75" by 1". It was done in ink and mechanical pencil for use in a locket. The locket now belongs to her grandmother.

Chris Truppner is probably the most interesting artist I have ever worked with. He has had a lifelong career in politics and approached me with a manuscript for a children;s book. Much to my surprise he refused an offer to publish his works professionally and instead opted for self-publishing. His biggest concerns were keeping all creative control over his works, message, and marketing. He has donated all proceeds to charity. It was a pleasant surprise from a politician.
Not long after the successful release of "The Stiff Brown Bear & The Lonely House" Chris approached me with over a dozen new manuscripts. His favorite was about a little rabbit named Eric, and Chihuahua named Flower, who became friends. When he told me his vision was for a tribal children's book I was just at a loss for words. The whole idea was a challenge. Despite the bold lines and edgy art choice the finished book was just sweet and unusual. Today, it is our second most popular book.
